Nourishing your spleen- why root vegetables matter in chinese medicine
A Chinese medicine approach to digestion, energy, and gentle nourishment
Simple, warm meals are often the most powerful when it comes to supporting the body, especially through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Roasted carrots with walnuts and tahini is a grounding, nourishing dish that supports digestion, energy production, and overall balance.
In Chinese medicine, the Spleen and Stomach are central to how we create energy (Qi). Warm, cooked foods like this help to strengthen digestion, reduce dampness, and build sustained energy, making this dish ideal during cooler months or times of fatigue.
Why this combination works
Carrots – Support digestion & build Qi
Carrots are naturally sweet and grounding, helping to tonify the Spleen and support digestion. They are gentle on the system and help build energy without overwhelming the body.
Walnuts – Nourish Kidney energy & warmth
Walnuts are deeply nourishing in TCM, known for supporting Kidney energy, brain function, and overall vitality. They also provide warmth and help anchor the body during colder seasons.
Tahini – Moistening & nourishing
Made from sesame seeds, tahini helps to nourish Yin and moisten dryness, supporting the body when it feels depleted or run down. It adds richness without heaviness.
Roasting – Warming the digestive system
Cooking methods matter in Chinese medicine. Roasting adds warmth, making food easier to digest and helping to support the Spleen while reducing cold and dampness.
